Dr. Bullie’s Notes: Reminiscences of Early Georgia and of Philadelphia and New Haven in the 1800’s
By James Holmes, edited by Delma E. Presley
Dr. James Holmes, born in 1804 in Sunbury, Georgia, was a doctor who attended to the medical needs of people like wealthy plantation owner Pierce Butler, his family, and his enslaved people. As such, and as a Georgia legislator, he had an unusually intimate view of Georgia society of his day. In 1875-1880, Holmes wrote a series of his recollections for a local newspaper and called them “Dr. Bullie’s Notes.” Dr. Presley has collected, edited, and annotated these articles, and added an index, backnotes, and bibliography.
