Major Butler’s Legacy: Five Generations of a Slaveholding Family (by Malcolm Bell)
The Butler family, which owned plantations on Butler’s Island in McIntosh County and on St. Simons Island, played a prominent role in coastal Georgia history from pre-Revolution days, and is closely intertwined with the story of African American enslavement there. History Malcolm Bell examines their role, from Major Pierce Butler’s political role in preserving slavery post-Revolution to his grandson Pierce Butler’s financial ruin and 1859 sale of his enslaved people in “The Weeping Time,” the largest auction of enslaved people in the United States.
