The Children of Pride (by Robert Manson Myers)
In 1952, Robert Manson Myers, then a Tulane University professor, stumbled across a remarkable archive of thousands of letters to and from the family and friends of Reverend Dr. Charles Colcock Jones of Liberty County. These letters, spanning the tumultuous years between 1854 and 1868, not only provide a detailed look at the cultural, religious and family life of that time, but also into the national struggle that stood ready to consume Georgia, particularly in the letters between Dr. Jones, his wife, and their son C.C. Jones, Jr., major of Savannah at the time. Myers has curated, arranged, and annotated these letters so that they read like a novel…or perhaps a Greek tragedy. The iconic book about Liberty County.
