‘Ware Sherman: A journal of Three Months’ Personal Experience in the Last Days of the Confederacy (by Joseph LeConte)
Edited by William Blair
Joseph LeConte, a Liberty County native and a slaveowner, was one of the foremost scientists of his day. This short journal details his exhausting and nerve-wracking effort to return to Liberty County in December 1864, during Sherman’s March to the Sea toward the end of the Civil War, to rescue his trapped family. Combining a keen descriptive eye and even humor, LeConte vividly shows the chaos of war as he attempts to hide from the Union soldiers and formulate a plan to spirit his family out of the County, while coming to terms with the changed relationship with his former slaves.
